The kharif season usually starts with the advent of monsoon in June or July. Data showed that till August 9, kharif crops had been sown in around 98 million hectares, 1.39 per cent more compared to the same period last year. Monsoon and sowing have been progressing well and the expectation is that the arrival of fresh supplies in the market should over the next few months curb the food price rise.
The sowing activities will continue till the middle of September. Due to adequate rainfall in the eastern regions in the last one week paddy sowing in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar, have picked up pace. While in western region, the monsoon has been favorable, benefiting crops like soybeans and cotton and in the northern and eastern regions, despite recent rainfall impact on the paddy crops remains a concern.
