For a nation like India where more than half of the population is dependent on farming, and given the demand of agriculture sector the chances for farming sector breaking records is no wonder. One such instance, is the county’s kharif foodgrain production which is likely to surpass the government’s target of 171.39 million tonne set for the 2025-26 crop year (July-June) buoyed by higher coverage and favourable monsoon rains.
Already, in the agriculture ministry in may release the third advance estimates, which showed that the country achieved a record foodgrain production of 353.96 mt in the fiscal year 2024-25, implicitly, 21.66 mt higher than the production of 332.30 mt in 2023-24, signifying an increase of nearly 6.5%. Now, this estimation of increase in foodgrain supply is a win-win situation both in India and abroad. Kharif crop coverage has expanded to more than 110 million hectares, slightly higher than the recent average of 109.5 million hectares.
