India is the fourth largest oilseeds producer in the world. It has 20.8% of the total area under cultivation globally, accounting for 10% of global production. The country produces Groundnut, Soybean, Sunflower, Sesamum, Niger seed, Mustard, And Safflower oilseeds. The government has fixed a 447.5 lakh tonnes (lt) record target of oilseeds production for the 2024-25 crop year (July-June).
The production of oilseeds in India has been growing for the last five years. According to the final estimates of production of major crops for the year 2022-23, the total oilseeds production in the country was estimated at record 413.55 lakh tonnes which is higher by 33.92 lakh tonnes than the previous year’s oilseeds production.The government is likely to announce the National Oilseeds Mission during the regular Budget for 2024-25 where the production target will be fixed for a 5-10 year period.
