Women’s Equality Day, August 26th, as a national day celebrating the importance of the women’s suffrage movement and the work to secure and expand equal rights today. The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.
Women and girls deserve to live free from violence and fear. Next month marks 30 years since the Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) a historic law that I championed and wrote. VAWA gave our Government more comprehensive tools to prevent and prosecute sexual assault, provide support for survivors, and save countless women’s lives.
