On this day people from various states observe this occasion by different names such as Bihu, Pongal, etc. During the festival, the people of Odisha offer prayers and food to the Sun God and seek blessings for a healthy and prosperous life. In farmer’s society, this festival is really a valuable one as on this day they go for harvesting and they call it a harvesting festival. In our state Odisha newly harvested rice is used to make makar chaula which is one of the favourite dishes in Odisha.
