India’s May Tea Output Falls 30% , Lowest Level In Over a Decade

India is the second-largest producer of tea globally. Indian tea is one of the finest in the world owing to strong geographical indications, heavy investment in tea processing units, continuous innovation, augmented product mix, and strategic market expansion. India exports tea to more than 25 countries throughout the world. Russia, Iran, UAE, USA, the UK, Germany, and China are some of the major importers of tea from India.

The board, disheartened, attributed the excessive heat and scant rainfall to be the cause of it. More than half of the country’s tea production occurs in Assam, which also fell by more than 26 per cent to 49.84 million kilogrammes. In the region, tea production during this year so far is likely to be lower by around 30-35 per cent compared to the same period last year. India’s tea production fell 30% in May to 90.92 million kg, it’s lowest level in over a decade, largely due to heat and insufficient rainfall.
