Several factors are contributing to the potential increase in onion prices. The heavy rains in Saurashtra-Gujarat have raised concerns about the quality of onions still in the fields, as well as those stored in stock. Despite the challenges, the monsoon season in Gujarat has been favorable overall, with normal sowing expected compared to last year.

The harvest of the kharif onions would be delayed in the areas that have been getting rainfall, which could keep the onion prices firm for at least two to three weeks. Onion prices, currently at ₹60-80/kg, are expected to stay high through Diwali due to heavy rainfall damaging crops in Maharashtra and other states, causing supply delays. The Centre has started retail sales of onions from its buffer stock to cool the onion prices
