The retail and wholesale inflation in rice has been in double digits since last year. India, the largest exporter of rice, banned export of broken rice in August 2022 to ensure adequate local supplies. Rice exporters said competing countries like Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam were making inroads into the overseas markets developed by Indian exporters. The export duty on par-boiled rice should be a fixed amount to rule out any variation in the duties paid at different ports by different entities.
India’s basmati rice exports in the 2023-24 fiscal year (April-March) rose about 25.61% in terms of value in rupees as compared with the previous fiscal. Rice exports during April-June of the current financial year have fallen by nearly 34% to 3.2 million tonnes (mt) after the Centre banned outward shipments of non-basmati white rice and broken rice and a 20% tariff on the parboiled variety. Exports of non-basmati white rice plunged a massive 78% to nearly 300,000 tonnes.
