About 23 Million Minor Irrigation Schemes Counted

India has 23.1 million minor irrigation schemes, according to a government census. There are 23.14 million minor irrigation schemes as per the 6th census as compared to 1.42 million minor irrigation schemes as per the 5th census. Out of 3.14 million minor irrigation schemes. 21.93 million or 94.8% are ground water and 1.21 million or 5.2% are surface water schemes.

The census collects detailed information on various parameters like irrigation sources, dug well, shallow, medium and deep tube wells, surface flow and surface lift schemes, irrigation potential created and utilized, ownership, holding size of land, devices used for lifting water, sources of energy, methods used for water distribution etc. Dug wells have the highest share in minor irrigation scheme, followed by shallow tube wells, medium tube wells and deep tube wells.
