During 2021-22, employment in the manufacturing sector grew 4.1 million, probably after economic activity started the recovery, with textiles, leather and footwear, basic metals and fabricated metal products notching up gains. Contact intensive sectors, such as hotels and restaurants, added 0.6 million while business services saw 2.2 million addition to employment.

The increase in employment in the pandemic year (2020-21) was led by agriculture and allied activities, construction, health and social welfare. World agricultural prices show signs of a rise from the third week of March 2020. The increases are marked for rice and wheat. One reason for this rise has been the stockpiling by households of rice and wheat, and the restrictions imposed by different countries on food exports.
