The government agencies are expected to procure more wheat than last year, potentially reaching 262 lakh tonnes, but falling short of the initial estimate of 300-310 lakh tonnes. Food Corporation of India (FCI) officials said they were confident of total procurement touching 270 lakh tonnes against earlier estimate of 300-310 lakh tonnes, which was arrived at after consultation with states.

The wheat procurement had declined last year due to a fall in domestic production and higher exports. The government has projected a record wheat production at 112.18 million tonne in the 2023-24 crop year (July-June) as per the second estimate of the agriculture ministry. FCI (Food Corporation of India) is the government’s nodal agency that undertakes procurement and distribution of foodgrains for the PDS and welfare schemes.
