India’s tea industry is expecting a better second quarter as retail demand has picked up across the country with the easing of Covid-led restrictions in most states.
Planters said good monsoon rains will give a boost to demand in rural areas where tea is the main beverage.
Tea production, which had suffered due to a long dry spell, recovered in June and July. Figures released by the Tea Board show that tea production in June stood at 168.84 million kg, 12.15% higher than the pre-pandemic production level of 2019. In the January-June period of 2021, India produced 443.85 million kg of tea.
