Successful Vegetable Cultivation Through Check Dam Water Management

Water management of vegetable cultivation through check dams involves constructing small barriers across streams or gullies to harvest rainwater, recharge groundwater, and store water for supplemental irrigation, particularly during dry seasons. These structures help stabilize water availability for crops like tomatoes, chillies, and other vegetables, enhancing yields by 10-15% and increasing net returns.
A check dam with a field channel constructed at G. Maliguda village in Boipariguda block, Koraput district under WDC-PMKSY 2.0 has brought tangible improvements. The assured irrigation facility now supports vegetable cultivation across 30–35 acres, proving to be a boon for local farmers and enhancing livelihoods through sustainable water management. This success indicate that check dams can improve vegetable crop yields by 10-15%, providing a net return of up to Rs. 60,000 per hectare.
