The Kharif crop is sown in India in June-July (Rainy season) and harvested around October. Kharif crops require high temperature and humidity at the time of sowing and a dry environment at the time of ripening. The timely arrival of the monsoon is crucial, especially for the agricultural sector, as around 56% of the net cultivated area and 44% of food production depend on monsoon rains.
A successful pulses and oilseed crop this kharif season will support the government in its efforts to combat food inflation. Depending upon region, farmers kick off plantation of kharif crops with the first showers of the four-month southwest monsoon season that begins in June. July is agriculturally the most critical month during the kharif season, since rains during this month determine yields and crop health.
