International Yoga Day : Yoga For Self and Society

The Indian government, in a coup of sorts, convinced the UN General Assembly to declare June 21st as International Day of Yoga, thus reclaiming yoga, which had proliferated across the world in a variety of avatars, for Bharat. As Yoga exercises have shown significant benefits for physical and mental well-being, it was considered important by the UN to globally promote this wellness practice, which originated in ancient India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged gram panchayat presidents to make holistic health a people-led movement by spreading awareness about yoga and millet, which he said help preserve soil health and aid in the fight against climate change. Yoga is essential for the body and mind, millets promote good health through nutrition. Millets need for our diet because it contains pearl and foxtail millet have a lower GI compared to rice or wheat, helps manage obesity and heart disease.
