India banned the export of rice in July 2023 to control inflation and secure food security. But now, India has permitted exports of 2,00,000 tonne of non- basmati white rice to Malaysia. Some exports of non-basmati white rice, in limited quantities, were allowed later, subject to certain laid-out conditions. The export policy relating to non-basmati white rice was revised from “free” to “prohibited”.
Previously, India had permitted rice exports to countries like Nepal, Cameroon, UAE, and Kenya, among others, but in varying quantities and under specific conditions. The export policy for non-basmati white rice was changed from free to prohibited, but exceptions are made based on government permissions to meet the food security needs of other countries.
