The Odisha Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has approved the auction of 1 lakh tonnes of surplus rice from the 2024-25 kharif season, managed by the Odisha State Civil Supplies Corporation (OSCSC). This move aims to clear old stock, prevent storage shortages, and improve system liquidity, with the state covering potential financial losses. OSCSC will act as the nodal agency, following Food Corporation of India (FCI) guidelines for the open market sale.
To prevent rice deterioration and free up warehouse space for new arrivals. While the state has faced challenges with surplus stocks, the Central Government has also agreed to procure additional rice from Odisha. The initiative ensures that despite high production, storage constraints are managed, and financial losses are minimized, with the state government bearing the burden of such losses. This action follows the state’s efforts to manage surplus production and ensure efficiency in its procurement operations.
