Prices of Rice, Potato Decline Amid Surge In Supply And Global Competition

The cost of rice and potatos , two staple foods, has begun to decline. The supply chain has been disrupted according to the potato traders in Uttar Pradesh, despite Mamata Banerjee’s decision to permit inter-state potato trade for the next seven days on the grounds that there won’t be shortage of the tuber for the state and price won’t go up.

Prices of basmati rice at the retail end have fallen to Rs 60 per kg from Rs 75 per kg in the last three months as the export market is not strong enough since other countries have penetrated global markets offering rice at the lower price compared to India. India has set the minimum export price of basmati rice at $950 per tonne.
