Farmers grow mustard and wheat in this region as rabi crops. To recapitulate about oilseeds, Mustard is the key oilseed crop that can help in addressing the challenge of demand – supply gap of edible oils in India. It is world’s third most important source of edible oil after soybean and palm. India is the third largest producer of rapeseed-mustard after Canada, China and contributing to around 12 % of world’s total production.
The average mandi price in case of chana was 11 per cent higher at ₹6,041/quintal against its MSP of ₹5,440/quintal. Both mustard and masur rates were about 7 per cent lower than their MSPs during April-June. While farmers on an average received ₹5,281/quintal from mustard, the mandi price was ₹5,990/quintal in case of masur. Farmer producer organisations (FPO) have therefore revived their demand for resumption of futures trade in the commodity.
